Children under 14 years old had the lowest tuberculosis mortality. It rose gradually from 20 years of age and rose steeply after 40 years of age. It reached the peak at the age of 65. Tuberculosis mortality in female at 20 - 29 years of age was slightly higher than that of male but it was lower than male after 40 years of age (Table 7). The overall weighted tuberculosis mortality was 20.9/100,000. As compared with the tuberculosis mortality (35/100,000) in 1984/85, the mortality in present survey showed a 40.0% decrease and the annual reduction rate was 8.9%.

The were six provinces and municipalities had a mortality lower than 10/100,000: i.e. Shanghai (1.5/100,000), Ninxia (3.1/100,000), Beijing (5.2/100,000), Shaanxi (6.3/100,000), Hebei (7.6/100,000) and Shandong (8.2/100,000). The moralities in the first group of provinces was 7-21 times higher than that of the second group. Refarding age group, 0-4 age group had the lowest percentage of tuberculosis death among total death; 5-9 and 10-14 age groups next. It increased after 15 years of age and 30-59 age group had the highest percentage. The percentage decrease after seventy years of age.
