SUMMARY
The World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific conducted a new regional training course on the management of tuberculosis programmes at intermediate level for 24 participants from 13 Member States, in Beijing, People's Republic of China from 20 October to 14 November 1997.
The objectives of the course were to upgrade the managerial skills of the participants on national tuberculosis programmes (NTP), with a focus on the implementation of the directly-observed treatment, short course (DOTS).
During the first week of the course lectures and papers on technical or operational topics were presented by lecturers from the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (Paris), WHO, Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (Japan), and the Ministry of Health, People's Republic of China.
In the second week, the participants worked on modules at two levels, national and district. They also took part in a four-day field visit and practiced their skills in two counties each in the Hebei province.
The last week was devoted to practical exercises and the presentation of group action plans.
The questionnaires filled in at the end of the course showed that the majority of the participants were satisfied with the course and its content.
