関空効果の続く近畿で大幅増、首都圏のシェアは40%を割る
都道府県別の1996年の海外旅行者数では、最大マーケットである首都圏で665万人と、はじめてシェア40%を割り込んだ。伸び率でも対前年6.5%増と、全国平均の9.1%を下回った。
一方、関西国際空港の開港以来、海外旅行者数の増加が著しい近畿地方では、全府県で全国平均を大きく上回る伸びがみられた。特に一昨年の阪神大震災による影響が大きかった兵庫では、対前年29.3%という大きな伸びとなった。この他では、関西空港への連絡が良い北陸の各県や、北海道の伸びが大きい。

Kansai International Airport helps Kinki region post substantial gain: share of Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area drops below 40%.
Overseas travelers by prefecture in 1996 came to 6.65 million for the Greater Tokyo Metropolitan area, the largest market in the country. However, this area's share of the national total dropped below 40% for the first time. The area's annual growth rate was 6.5%, below the national average of 9.1%.
Since the Kansai International Airport was opened the Kinki area has seen significant increases in the number of overseas travelers, with growth rates much higher than the average for all prefectures. Hyogo Prefecture, which was devastated by the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995, turned in a particularly high annual growth rate of 29.3%. Growth rates were also high for the Hokuriku prefectures which can readily access the Kansai International Airport as well as for Hokkaido.
