New-KAPS, the New Kawasaki Automatic Power Control System
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has developed the New Automatic Power Control System for marine boiler (New-KAPS) on advanced, automated ships.
KHI's know-how accumulated in the development of its very successful analog boiler control system, Kawasaki Automatic Power control System (KAPS), was put to full use in the development of New-KAPS.
Utilizing a 32-bit microprocessor-based original digital control system, New-KAPS was designed for flexibility and to upgrade efficiency in all areas.
A system configuration diagram is shown in Fig. 1.
The automatic boiler control system consists of an automatic boiler control panel (ABCP), a boiler operation panel (BOP), a burner operation panel (BNP), a boiler gauge board (BGB), transmitters, control valves and actuators.
Features
1. Fully duplex system
The digital controller is equipped with a fully duplex system with CPU boards, I/0 boards, and power supply units.
2. Optimum interface between process control and logic control New-KAPS system conducts both the boiler process control and the burner sequence control (including N2 purge control).
3. Continuous operation of the boiler in case of system-down
Even in the case of a highly unusual shutdown of both of the duplex systems, the boiler will be continue in a holding condition in which it can be operated manually from the boiler operation panel.
4. Independent boiler trip circuit
The safety function composed of relay circuits is secured in case of the failure of both controllers.
5. Self diagnosis
CPU error check function
Power abnormal check function
I/0 check function
Manipulated value read-back check function
6. Indication of cause of system trouble
The cause of any control system trouble is indicated on the operation panel: the location of the trouble will be easily identified.
7. Type approval for Marine Boiler Control System
New-KAPS complies with LRS and NK rules.
