The First 10L90MC Mk5 Engine for Over-Panamax Container Vessels

The first MAN B & W 10L90MC Mk5 engine in the world, whose power has been increased by 10%, was completed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. (KHI) under close cooperation with MAN B & W Diesel A/S (B & W), and passed the type approval tests of classification societies in May, 1996.

Features

1. High propulsion efficiency and low fuel oil consumption

L90MC Mk5 engine has lower speed than K90MC/MC-C engines normally applied on current large container vessels, which enables to choose the propeller with high propulsion efficiency and consequently to reduce the power required for sailing at the same ship speed as the higher speed engine.

Besides, lower mean effective pressure due to the lower required power brings better fuel consumption. The 10L90MC Mk5 engine can resultantly achieve the economical sailing.

2. Low hull vibration

For large power engines (large bore and many cylinder number) installed on container vessels, it is essential to reduce vibratory exciting force to keep hull vibration small. The newly developed uneven firing order, introduced on the 10L90MC Mk5 engine, has successfully reduced X-type guide force moment and torsional vibration as well.

3. High reliability

Concerning reliability of the combustion chamber, the newly introduced 3-fuel valve design improves fuel atomization and equalizes heat load in the combustion chamber. New design of reduced number of cylinder cover bolts makes maintenance work easy. The reliability has been carefully confirmed in the shop test.

The 10L90MC Mk5 engines were installed on over-panamax container vessels of 5,250 TEU built in KHI- Sakaide works. The first vessel was put in service in January, 1997.
