Converted Ship
Fishery Training Ship TENYO MARU
After the completion of the third version of the TENYO MARU, it became necessary to extend and upgrade various equipments and installations used for practice and observation, and to do same to living compartments, etc. The bulk of these modifications were necessitated by the increase in the number of female students -a reflection of the sudden change of the social situation that was underway in Japan and other countries- changes in the way navigators were being trained in seamanship, the establishment of the 200-mile zone, etc.
Therefore, work to extend the hull by 5.50m was started in January, 1996 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. Shimonoseki Shipyard. The extension work was completed on March 25 of the same year.
Thus, the international tonnage of the third version of TENYO MARU is now 1,020gross tons (716tons in domestic gross tonnage), and the hull, various equipment, and installations have been changed completely.
