Cargo Barge Line (Pusher/Barge for Transport of Steel Materials)
Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. built and delivered three 19 gross tonnage pushers, the KAIEN Nos. 1, 2 and 3, two 633 deadweight ton steel transport barges CB601 & 602, and three 720 deadweight ton steel transport barges CB701, 702 & 703 to Seitetsu Unyu Co., Ltd. as cargo barge lines for inland sea transport in Tokyo Bay.
The features of the cargo barge lines include tile following.
1. In order to save manpower, the crew of each vessel is only two (one for ship operation and the other as an assistant), while the main engines and all other main auxiliary machinery are remotely controlled and monitored from the wheelhouse.
2. A three pin joint system has been adopted for the connection between the pusher and the barge to save labor in connection and separation work (the first time that such a system has been introduced for use in small pushers). The pusher and barge can be completely joined as one body to mitigate any pitching of the pusher when they are connected.
3. Anti-vibration and noise absorbing materials are used in the engine room, the room for the crew and the wheelhouse, while a low noise type muffler is adopted for exhaust gas piping to mitigate noise on board the ship.
4. Each barge has been equipped with a bow thruster (a propeller fitted to the bow for sideways movement) for easier operation when coming along side or leaving the pier.
