FIRST MERCURY,a 170,000-dwt Ore/Coal Carrier
Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries has built 7 vessels of the 170,000 MTDW Ore/Coal carriers since 1996. The FIRST MERCURY is the first vessel of 7 sisters and was delivered to Mars Shipping Co., S.A. on April 9, 1996 at Kure No.1 Works.
The vessel is a conventional single side shell bulk carrier having 9 holds with side-rolling type hatch cover each. However its design was renovated to achieve good performance and aiming at simplicity and easiness from operational point of view. To ensure the safe operation of vessel, the hull structure was carefully examined by using the FEA (Finite Element Analysis). Also the performance of hull form and propeller was investigated intensively using CFD (Computerized Fluid Dynamics) with interaction of many tank test data of this type of vessels.
The features : excellent speed- power performance with IHI LV (Low Viscous) fin attached at stern part; energy-saving type slow speed diesel engine ;high cargo loading capacity for Dunkirk max bulker; alternate ore loading in 5 holds; port ballast loadable ill holds No. 2, 4, 6 and 8; slender superstructure reducing air-resistance ; simple and easy operation/maintenance on engine room equipment and deck machinery; easy ballasting operation with independent main and stripping lines ; hold access complied with AWWF.
