・On-sea construction technology
An ultra-large floating structure is too large to build at any building dock or other site on land, and are thus constructed by joining floating units together at sea. The development objective of on-sea construction is to complete a 500ha scale floating structure in about 3 years.
Research objectives are as follows.
(1) To maintain precise dimensions of each unit (full-scale unit : 300m×60m×2m).
(2) To reliably and efficiently join the units, which are acted upon by waves and other external forces.
(3) Under-water welding techniques.
Remarks: Construction technology has already been established by the completion of joining the units in July 1996.
・ Ultra-long Durability Technology
Various methods are conceivable to make a floating structure durable enough to withstand a long time use of more than 100 years.
Research objectives are as follows.
(1) To develop on-sea joining technology of new anti-corrosive materials (e.g. Titan-clad plate).
(2) A monitoring system for underwater components (detect cracks, corrosion, etc.).
(3) A repair system for damaged underwater components.
・Operational Functions of Facilities on Floating Structures
To apply the Mega-Float to facilities such as airports, harbor terminals, and factories, the functions of those facilities on the Mega-Float must demonstrate an adequate level of performance.
To this end, the following research programs are now underway.
(1) To estimate magnitude of vibration, noise, thermal effect, magnetic effect, and other factors that may affect the operational functions of facilities on the Mega-Float.
(2) To develop countermeasures to prevent or reduce the influence of those factors, if necessary, so that the facilities can be operated.
Remarks : Landing and take-off tests by helicopter on floating model have successfully carried out in October 1996.
・Environmental Assessment Technology
Although a floating structure is generally considered to have relatively little impact on the environment, there is neither sufficient data nor assessment methods available to prove this.
Research objectives are as follows :
(1) To make precise estimation of water flow around a floating structure.
(2) To develop an assessment program of the current and ecosystem in the sea area where a floating structure is placed.
