Osler questioned the graduates, "...What is life? you answer, I do not think--I act it: the only philosophy that brings you in contact with its real values and enables you to grasp its hidden meaning."

Osler's advice on spirituality was brief, "Begin the day with Christ and His Prayer--you need no other...As the soul is dyed by the thoughts, let no day pass without contact with the best literature of the world,...Fifteen or twenty minutes day by day will give you fellowship with the great minds of the race, and little by little as the years pass you extend your friendship with the immortal dead. They will give you faith in your own day...mankind, it has been said, is always advancing. Man is always the same."

Osler's introduction, written in his late years, to The life of Pasteur by R. Vallery- Radot has become an example that others have tried to emulate. It demonstrated so clearly what a student of history and science Osler was. His description of beautiful and concise prose began, "Whether to admire more the man or his method, the life or the work, I leave for the readers this well told story to decide. Among the researches that have made the name of Pasteur a household word in the civilized world, three are of the first importance-a knowledge of the true nature of the processes in fermentation-a knowledge of the chief maladies which have scourged man and animals-a knowledge of the measures by which either the body may be protected against these diseases, or the poison neutralized when once within the body."

Osler then gave a review of man's knowledge of infectious diseases and of the contributions of Pasteur. Next, he discussed Pasteur's family background, character and
