Earlier in my career, cartoons which gave definition to the newly developing discipline of neonatology and concept of gestational age, weight and appearance of infants were devised in 1958 at Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. (Slide)
Neonatology or "The Hand," as it is called by many, called attention to vital areas of concern for the newborn and was used as an approach to caring for the newborn. These cartoons introduced the concern for iatrogenica, or medically induced problems. Use of "The Hand" has continued and is felt to be important. (Slide)
