Summary
As I hope this paper has illustrated, within health care we have come from different starting points and travelled along many different paths in the pursuit of quality. Drawing on previous experiences of quality assessment in health care will enable us to learn from examples of success and failure to date and to plan programmes that effectively meet the needs of patients, carers and managers within the current context of health care. This is essential if we want to maximise the potential of our quality assessment efforts to achieve real and lasting improvements in patient care.
