Apart from the fact that I am working as a researcher in health care, I was also trained as a nurse. In that capacity I have been working as a community nurse, as a hospital nurse and a psychiatric nurse.

I know that you are interested in Dutch health care, but I would not be surprised if not all of you know where the Netherlands arc situated. So I would like to start with introducing Holland to you. By the way, for you, as a foreigner, there is no difference between 'Holland' and 'the Netherlands'. You can use both names. As you can see, Holland is a small country on the North Sea, in the northern part of Western Europe. Most of its territory is situated well below sea level. Not only is it small, it is also densely populated with a high degree of urban development. The number of inhabitants is about 15 1/2 million at the moment. When we look at the number of cubic kilometers per Inhabitant, it means that for every 3 inhabitants in Japan we have 4 inhabitants.

Here you see the map of the Netherlands, covered with the flag. Because the country is small, we are very keen on making it bigger. For our country the most common way to do this is by creating new land out of sea or lakes. That is why a good deal of the country consists of 'polders', land that is made in a place where there used to be water. You can see an example of it on the picture,
