Workshop 1: Lower Cost System Selection for 0ffshore Field Development

The first day's workshop concerns the selection of lower cost systems for offshore field development. The session will cover both history of and innovative structures for developing marginal fields profitably in both shallow and deepwater. Topics to be discussed include low-cost offshore facilities, effects of technical innovation on offshore field development, light weight platform designs, design of low-cost structures for ice infested waters, and compliant tower design. Case histories will cover the selection of subsea systems versus extended reach drilling and design of a new FPSO for a southeast Asia development. At the end of the session a panel of presenters, with input from the audience, will discuss how present engineering practice is helping to lower the cost of field development and what future research and development efforts are needed to enable economical recovery of marginal reserves.

Workshop 2: Key Components and Issues in Deepwater Technology Development

The second day's workshop will cover development of solutions to key problems and issues in deepwater structures technology. The morning talks will focus on the state of offshore technology, particularly regarding hydrodynamics and structures. Discussion will include numerical and physical simulation of moored floating structures, offshore R&D projects in Japan, riser design and operation, and comparison and discussion of new concepts for deepwater production. Development of a new deepwater floating production concept will be presented. Then, recent and current project experience in deepwater field developments will be presented and discussed by two operators working in different areas of the world. Following the last presentation, a panel composed of the presenters will discuss their thoughts regarding the state of deepwater technology and where future research and development should be conducted. Audience participation in the panel discussion is encouraged.
