It is said that 1,000 tons of water are needed to produce just one ton of rice.

The Japanese government over the generations has provided priority water rights for the production of rice, the staple crop.

 

47. Scene of hothouse cultivation

 

Agricultural water in Japan used to mean water for use in rice fields. Increased sophistication in agriculture now makes it possible for us to produce vegetables, livestock, fruit and so forth regardless of the season and these, too, require large quantities of water.
