CHAPTER 2 SOCIO-ECONOMIC CONDITION
2.1 Social Condition
Total population in the Indonesia is counting more than 194 million in year 1996 and is ranked at 4th largest country in the world, with following China,India and USA.
Population per area is concentrated at Java and Madura Islands, which area is occupying only 6.7 percent of total Indonesia area but is counting almost at 59 percent of total Indonesia population, which is equivalent to about 115 million.
These two islands are classified by the highest density area in the world population but the other Islands of Kalimantan and Irian Jaya are the lowest density area as shown on the following Table and Figure.
Indonesia is consisting of main 5 islands and more than 30 islands groups,totally counting at more than 17 thousand islands which are spread across equator. The total land area of the Indonesia is approximately 1.90 million km2 and the total sea area is 7.9 million km2, which is stretched to 5,000km for East-West Boundary and 1,700km for North-South Boundary, being called "The Greatest Archipelago Country in the World".
Majority of people in the Indonesia is consisted by Malay Family, which is classified with Java Tribe, Sunda Tribe, Madura Tribe and Bali Tribe etc.
