3. 3,399 million tons of cargo passed through Japanese ports in 1994. Of this tonnage, 191 million tons were exported while 863 million tons were imported from / to Japan. Domestic cargo (excluding ferry cargo) amounted to 1,280 million tons, and ferry cargo were 1,064 million tons. All these cargo were handled at either public or private berths. At public berths, about 1,439 million tons were handled per annum. As for the type of cargo passing through ports, major exports include metals, transport machinery (such as automobiles), and others (such as plant engineering machines).
