* By country, the number of so-called major ports (those ports as defined as major port or public port by each country) in East Asian countries is as follows: Indonesia (656 ports), Japan (133), Philippines (122), China (57), Korea (45), Malaysia (25) and Thailand (20).

* Total cargos handled at the ports by country (unit: million tons) are as follows: Japan (3,418: 1995), China (1,023: 1994), Korea (663: 1995), Indonesia (494: 1995).
