FROM "PHYSICAL MEDICINE AND REHABILITATION" TO "REHABILITATIVE AND PHYSICAL MEDICINE"

William J. Peek (Netherlands Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine)

In most countries where rehabilitation medicine is a recognized and board-certified medical specialism its history starts at the end of World War II or afterwards. Looking back on the past fifty years one can discern quite clearly a change in conception and in daily practice. A change from focussing on the physical medical approach in the process of rehabilitation, aimed mainly at curing or diminishing physical impairments, to focussing on the early diagnosis of existing or imminent disabilities in order to take in due time all the measures needed to prevent or minimise the functional, physical, psychic, social and economic consequences of these disabilities.
