THE HYPERTROPHIC EFFECT OF ISOMETRIC RESISTANCE EXERCISE

Hasan Oguz (Selcuk University Faculty of Medicine Department of P.M.R., Konya, Turkey)

We intended to determine the hypertrophic and strengthening effects of isometric resistance exercise performed at various knee angles on the heads of quadriceps muscle.

Twenty six patients with osteoarthrosis of the knee who were diagnosed clinically and radio10gieally were included for this study. Of them 6 were selected as control group. All the patients received physical therapy before the exercise and analgesics were prescribed if needed 'in order to relieve pain that may alter the effectiveness of the exercise. Control group did not receive any exercise. The knee angles used in exercises were 0°, 15°, 30°, 60°, 90°, respectively. Exercise program lasted for four weeks. The areas of the heads of the quadriceps muscle were determined by computed tomography scanning before and after the program. And quadriceps muscle strength was determined before and after the program at 90°knee angle.

Cross sectional areas of the muscle heads and strength were conspicuously significant than control group. However, the effectiveness of the isometric resistance exercise was not affected by the different knee angles.

CROSS LEG PUSH UP AND DOWN ISOMETRIC EXERCISE

Takao Iwasaki (Fukuoka University, Fukuoka, Japan), Hirofumi Abe, Katuyoshi Setu

Purpose: It is said that quadriceps setting exercise or straight leg raising exercise are not so useful. So we have tried for the purpose of finding the efficient and simple way of the leg muscle exercise for the patients who are forced stay in bed.

Method: The patients cross the legs on the foot joint, and both legs do the isometric contraction. Of the two legs, under leg try to push up the upper leg, and upper leg try to push down the under leg. Using the Holter electromyography ME300P, we measure the extensor muscle activity of under leg (Rectus femoris muscle, Tibiaris anterior muscle) and flexor muscle activity of the upper leg (Biceps femoris muscle, Gastrocnemius muscle) for the ten normal adults with age of 18-50.

Result: Large muscle activities are found except the Gastrocnemius muscle. Compare Rectus femoris muscle activity with Biceps femoris muscle, there are two groups. The one is Rectus femoris superior group, the other is Biceps fernotis superior group. Compare Tibiaris anterior muscle activity with Gastrocnemius muscle, Tibiaris anterior is superior in all. When the maximum isometric contractions are done for this method, we found the several times muscle activities of normal speed walking, and straight leg raising exercise.

Conclusion: Cross leg push up and down isometric exercise can do the simultaneous contraction of the lower leg extensor and the upper leg flexor, saves the exercise time, makes use large muscle activities. We think this exercise is one of the effective measure.
