Department of Medicine, Kusatsu Branch Hospital, Gunma University Hospital, Gunma, Japan
Purpose: Refractory cases of atopic dermatitis have increased in teenagers and young adults. The purpose of this study is to control the skin symptoms and pruritus of such patients in daily life.
Methods: Seventy patients (43 males and 27 females, median 23 years) took repeatedly a 10-minute 42℃ acidic hot-spring bath 2 times daily.
Results: The skin symptoms of 53 out of 70 cases (76%) were improved and pruritus was improved in 34 out of the 53 cases (64%). In 30 out of 42 cases examined whose skin symptoms were improved, many "Staphylococci aureus" detected on the skin surface disappeared or decreased through balneotherapy. In contrast, many "Staphylococci aureus" remained in 8 out of 10 cases examined whose skin symptoms were not improved.
Conclusion: The balneotherapy using acidic hot-spring water may be useful for controlling the skin symptoms and pruritus of acute flares of refractory cases of atopic dermatitis.
