THE ILLNESS BEHAVIOR QUESTIONNAIRE (IBQ) PROFILES OF CHRONIC PAIN PATIENTS IN JAPAN

Tetsumi Honda (Tokyo Metropolitan Rehabilitation Hospital, Tokyo, Japan)

Toshihiko Maruta (Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Min, USA)

Aim of Investigation: To carry out a rehabilitation program for any chronic pain patient, a through psychological evaluation is needed. Fifty-one chronic pain patients were classified into 6 subgroups based on 7 scores in the Japanese version of the IBQ (1966). We investigated the characteristics of each subgroup.

Methods: Mean IBQ scale scores and coefficients of variation for each score were compared to reveal the distinctive profiles in the 6 subgroups.

Results: The prominent score and its mean IBQ scores, and coefficients of variation are reported according to subgroups: SG1 (S1, 6.0, 25.7), SG2 (S7, 4.4, 15.3), SG3 (S6, 4.3, 11.4), SG4 (S2, 4.4, 24.2), SG5 (S5, 3.7, 14.2), SG6 (-,-,-)

Conclusions: The prominent profile in subgroup 1 is hypochondria, subgroup 2: irritable to interpersonal friction, subgroup 3: apt to deny life stress, subgroup 4: non-acceptance of reassurance, subgroup 5: depressive, and subgroup 6: mal-responsive to IBQ.

PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR PAIN MANAGEMENT IN PERIARTHRITIS SHOULDER IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY, INDIA.

H N Debsarma, Deptt. of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Institute of Neurological Scieneos, Guwahati - 781 006, Assam, (India).

An attempt has been made to ecru pare the pain management in periarthritis shoulder by two physical therapy modalities deep heat viz. Shortwave diathermy and superficial heat viz. paraffin bath application where literature is scant. 12 males and 18 females, total 30, subjects with periarthritis shoulders were taken in the study. Pain assessment of each subject was done at the beginning of the study. Out of 30, a group of 15 each was treated for 10 days with same unit with deep heat - shortwave diathermy (SWD) continuously for 10 minutes and other group with superficial heat paraffin bath for 10 minutes. No exercise therapy and modifications for relief of pain were allowed to them during this period. At the end of the study, evaluation of treatment efficacy to each subject was done by same method. Repeat comparable measures of pain by Visual Analogue scale (VAS) at the end of the study revealed significant response of relief of pain by SWD group than paraffin bath group. A positive relationship was shown between the measures of pain intensity relief following deep heat modality, however, paraffin baths by brushing on this difficult-to- treat area although messy are useful when deep heat is contraindieatod or not possible.
