ABSTRACT: The authors studied depression and anxiety variables of stroke patients for about 5 years. They did 5 evaluation: 1st, 4th, 6th, 12nd months and 5 years after stroke.
METHOD: We used Beck Depression inventory, Zung Anxiety Scale, Motor evaluation scale, Functional independent measure (FIM), Bathel scale, Meio, Pulses and Social support scale.
RESULTS: After 5 years 46,2% of the patients are depressed (11,5% with major depression); and 65,4% are anxious. Cronical depression correlates with the FIM (P=0,0121); Pulses (P=0,044); Meio (P=0,0098); Social support (P=0,0141) and depression (P=0,0079)
CONCLUSIONS: After 5 years about half of stroke patients are depressed and anxious. The social support seems to be an important variable related with psychological patients state.
