A FOLLOW-UP OF THE CEBU ELKS' CEREBRAL PALSY CLINIC

Jeanne O. Flordelis (Cebu Doctors' Hospital, Cebu, Phil)

The Cebu Elks' Cerebral Palsy Clinic established in the sixties, was closed in the 1970s due to funding problems. It was reopened in 1988 as a general rehab center. The center is operated solely by the Cebu Doctors' Colleges, Physical therapy Department in cooperation with the city government. Patients were treated as outpatients with goals of training for a home self administered or care-giver administered exercises at the end of the treatment period. They were re-evaluated periodically for the need of any additional training or physical therapy.

Presently, occupational therapy; patient education and nutrition classes are included as part of the services. This shows how cooperation of government and non-government agencies expand patient care. Since it reopened about 29,900 treatments were given to 2300 patients.

The block relieved the spastic condition (82%) allowed better nursing care (88%), freed the majority of patients from the embarrassment of a contorted limb, allowed voluntary movements in 78% affected muscles improvement in negative (92%) walking base and eased in fitment of caliper to aid further ambulation. The average period of effectiveness was 13 months ranged from 3 months to 18 months. Paraesthesia and local pain at injection site occurred in 12 and 22 cases following nerve blocks respectively. Twenty five blocks had to be repeated. Ease, simplicity, safety, therapeutic benefits and economic advantages of peripheral nerve block using phenol in Cerebral Palsy warrant its more widespread use.
