PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH REHABILITATION FOLLOWING BRAIN INJURIES

Nofihiko Ando (Yokohama-city University, Yokohama, Japan)

At the 1985 Symposium of the Japanese Society of Rehabilitation Medicine, the speakers described the characteristics of disabilities of patients with brain injuries and the need for comprehensive rehabilitation care. Since then awareness of the problems associated with brain-injured patients has improved and an increasing number of reports on this subject have been accepted at medical society meetings and by medical publications.

Even in the areas where medical services are relatively well organized, the system to accept brain-injured patients with unique disabilities is still inadequate. Coordination among medical and welfare facilities and area organizations is another problem where improvement is needed.
