Tetsuo Miyagawa, Fumihito Kasai, Masazumi Mizuma, and Yoshiaki Mori, (Dept. of Rehab. Medicine, Showa University, School of Medicine, Tokyo, JAPAN)

Pulmonary rehabilitation have been shown to reduce dyspnea, increase exercise capacity, reduce hospitalization, and improve quality of life in patients with chronic pulmonary disease. However, previous studies have not shown effects of pulmonary rehabilitation on grading of dyspnea, pulmonary impairment and its severity. We compared the effects of pulmonary rehabilitation on British Medical Research Council Dyspnea Scale in fifty seven patients with chronic pulmonary disease. 43 patients with COPD, 7 patients with post-TB, 5 patients with pulmonary fibrosis and 2 patients with bronchiectasis were performed six weeks pulmonary rehabilitation program. Results shown are mean values.

Compared with Grade 4 (severe), Grade2 (mild) and 3 (moderate) produced significantly greater improvement in FVC, %VC, PImax, and 6MD. However, Grade 4 showed significantly greater improvement in QOL. This data suggests that pulmonary rehabilitation should start earlier.
