FUNCTIONAL HAND PROSTHESIS FOR PARTIAL HAND AMPUTEES

Partial hand prosthetics is a neglected area in Upper extremity prosthetics. This is probably because of its less percentage of disability. But thinking of catering to those partial hand amputees with disability percentage 30% to 40%, I tried to develop this Functional Hand. Considering all the present available designs in the developing countries, this innovative device was found to be of a great relief to the patients.

It is a Voluntary closing functional device. The proximal interphalangeal joints are replaced by Spectacle Hinges and the digits are replaced by a Nylon rod. A tennis wire is incorporated as an acting string. It works on Anti-Tenodesis effect. The prosthesis was tried on patient for longer duration and the results are satisfactorily. All the six types of major joint prehension patterns were successfully tried. The Activities of daily living were performed by the patient with a bit of training.

Yumi Itoh, Hideo Watanabe and Toyoko Asami (Saga Medical School, Saga, Japan)

It is important to consider practical usage of the terminal device of the prosthesis when prescribe an above elbow prosthesis. The selection of utility hook or utility hand for the above elbow prosthesis is not always easy. We prescribed utility hook and utility hand for new adult above elbow amputee.

Materials were three new amputees of 30 years old male, 22 years old male, and 47 years old female. Cause of above elbow amputation of three cases was injury due to trauma and traffic accident. We prescribed the prosthesis with interchangeable utility hook and utility hand as terminal device for them.

Functionally, utility hook was superior to utility hand as terminal device of the prosthesis. However, one amputee preferred utility hand rather than utility hook for daily use. The reason why was the influence of Japanese way of social status.
