Engineering Service for Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation in Kanagawa Rehabilitation Center

Masahiro Ohashi, Teruaki Hayashi (Kanagawa Rehabilitation Center, Atsugi, JAPAN)

Kanagawa Rehabilitation Center runs 50 beds spinal cord injury (SCI) ward where the multi-disciplinary treatment for chronic SCI complications and rehabilitation treatment for new SCI patients are carried out.

The Center also has a Rehabilitation Engineering Unit to provide engineering services for SCIS. The gait and motion analysis laboratory is utilized, for example, recording the interim change of spastic gait in incomplete paraplegics or analyzing the motion of transfer in quadriplegics. Another team of engineers are working on the development of equipments for SCIS. The most of the developments are utilizing readily accessible, low cost technologies. Their products are such as a six wheels chair and a small sized motor-driven transfer aid to accommodate Japanese houses. Other equipments are standing-wheelchair, a skiing char, computer interfaces for quadriplegics and others.
