EDUCATION IN REHABILITATION MEDICINE

Joel A. DeLisa, M.D. (UMDNJ-New Jeresy Medical School, Newark, New Jersey, USA)

There are currently 80 accredited PM&R residency training programs in the United States with 1305 trainees. Of these, 861 (66Z) are males. There are currently 5569 board certified physiatrists with 321 newly certified diplomats this past year. The first subspecialty certification to be approved was spinal cord injury medicine. The ABPM&R has three letters of intent for additional subspecialties on file with the American Board of Medical Specialties. These are (1) Pain Management, (2) Pediatric Rehabilitation, and (3) Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. The board has five years to decide to go forward with these subspecialties, withdraw them or renew the letters of intent.

A key issue facing the specialty is whether primary care to the severely disabled is a part of the core specialty, a subspecialty or should not be addressed. The funding of graduate education is becoming a more pressing issue. A recent manpower study indicated that physiatry is still a shortage specialty in the United States. How well the field is marketed and its relation to managed care will determine manpower needs in the future.
