INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN CO-MEDICAL REHABILITATION WORKERS

Abstract: The National Rehabilitation Center for the Disabled (NRCD) has been undertaking various international cooperation programs.

1) Since 1981, the International Year of Disabled Persons, the NRCD has been organizing Training Course for Prosthetics and Orthotics Technicians for mainly Asian and Pacific countries, in cooperation with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Seventy six technicians from 20 countries participated the course.

2) From 1986 to 1994, the NRCD cooperated the development of China Rehabilitation Research Center. The NRCD assisted program designing and training of professionals.

3) Since the designation as WHO Collaborating Centre for Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation in 1995, the NRCD has been undertaking various projects such as manual development, survey, and seminar in collaboration with the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office.

4) Staff of the NRCD have been cooperating international cooperation projects for training and education of rehabilitation workers have been undertaken through Official Development Aids (ODA) of the Japanese Government and by Non-Government Organizations.

Problems in international cooperation programs in rehabilitation medicine field are discussed, and suggestions are made for further development.
