THIRD SESSION: PLANNING FOR AN ONGOING NETWORK

Peace House Hospice, Saturday 22 February 1997 (Afternoon)

INTRODUCTION TO SESSION 3
Dr Cynthia Goh pointed out that the discussion in the previous two sessions now made it possible to plan projects to be undertaken by the Asia Pacific Hospice Network.

Dr Hinohara said that funds for the Asia Pacific Network could continue to be available from the Nippon Foundation.

It was decided that Asian Pacific Network would next meet in Hong Kong on Sunday 15 November 1997, immediately before the APCC meeting (16-19 November 1997). Representatives from as many Asian countries as possible would be asked to attend. Countries not represented at this meeting included Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal, Pakistan.

Dr Deveraj: "If possible, the national hospice organisation in each country should be asked to send a representative. However, many countries do not yet have a national organisation. In Malaysia there are 8 hospice groups (soon to be 10) but no national organisation."

Dr Cynthia Goh: "It is the role of the Network to assist those who do not have a national body. The report of this meeting can be circulated by mail and by email."

Mrs Nelly Fung: "It is important for representatives to encourage networking within their own country. The present representatives need not be the representatives at the next meeting of the Network."

Dr Libby Smales: "How does the Asia Pacific Network interface with other hospice organisations in Europe, USA, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand? Is this duplication of effort?"

Dr Cynthia Goh: "We need to decide how we can invest our time and energy to have the greatest impact."

PROJECTS AND FUTURE PLANS FOR THE NETWORK

1 ASIAN HOSPICE DIRECTORY
It was decided to produce a directory of key persons and of all significant hospice organisations and palliative care services in each country. An updated Australian National Hospice Directory will be available in April 1997 and will be sent to all members of the Network, Dr Rosalie Shaw will develop the directory. (Ms Ellen Nightingale will supply the Access software which was used for the Australian directory.) All participants agreed to have an email address within a month to facilitate communication. A copy of the report of this meeting will be sent to all in the Asian Hospice Directory.
