(5) Measures in preparation for the Tokai Earthquake
Installation of a Detection System
Research presented at the Earthquake Academy of 1976 indicated the possibility of a Large Scale Earthquake in or around Suruga Bay.
In the same year, the Coordination Committee for Earthquake Prediction verified this prediction. The National Government decided to intensify observation and supervision of the Tokai area.
Observation devices such as seismographs and devices to measure distortion of the earth's crust were installed throughout the Tokai area and a 24-hour alert system enacted by the Meteorological Agency. In August of 1979, the Earthquake Assessment Committee for the Area under Intensified Measures against Earthquake Disaster was established and a system for the prediction of the Tokai Earthquake was set in motion.
