ABSTRACT
For the design of coastal structures, acting wave heights and runup heights are estimated in the model proposed by Goda. The Goda's model is applicable to estimate wave transformation on the beach with a slope smaller than 1/10. For steeper slopes, no estimation method is developed. The characteristics of wave transformation like wave shoaling, breaking, setdown and setup, surf beat, and runup height, therefore, are experimentally studied in the wave flume with the steep slopes. The tested slope gradients range from 1/10 to 1/3, the offshore wave steepnesses from 0.02 to 0.06.
The steeper the slope gradient is, the smaller the increase of wave height by wave shoaling becomes. The wave breaker type on the steep slope is classified into plunging breaker, which may cause serious beach erosion and coastal structure damages. The amplitude of wave setdown and setup are directly proportional to the slope gradient. The amplitude of surf beat does not depend on the slope gradient within the range between 1/10 and 1/3 but the relative water depth and offshore wave steepness. The steeper the slope gradient is, the higher the wave runup height becomes. The runup height distribution for irregular waves can be estimated from the runup heights for regular waves, assuming that the wave heights in deep water follows the Rayleigh distribution.
