ABSTRACT
Environmental impacts due to construction of the offshore man-made island are investigated from the following three points of view; l)creation of tranquil sea area behind the man-made island, 2)beach evolution of the neighbouring beach and 3)ecological impacts on marine organism, The construction of the offshore man-made island on a sandy beach facing directly the open sea creates the tranquil sea area behind the island as same as that inside the bay. Such calm sea area is available for a space for marine recreation and fisheries, Moderate tranquility leads to accumulation of planktons and larvae of clams and fishes and promotion of fisheries. Excessive tranquility, on the contrary, causes the deposition of cohesive fine sediments and the resultant reduction of marine organism living on the sandy beach. Remarkable accretion behind the island and erosion on the neighbouring beach are predicted by the 3D beach evolution model.
