ABSTRACT
Wave energy conversion systems previously proposed is briefly outlined. It is pointed
out that the previous systems of movable body type which gather energy systematically from multiple movable bodies failed to avoid the occurence of the harmful binding force at the elements that transfer the wave power. Then a new type of the system which is free from this problem is proposed. This consists of several sets of float, wire, counter-weight, and rachet mechanism. The up/down motion of several pairs of float and counter-weight produced by water wave is converted into a uni-directional rotational motion through rachet mechanism. In order to obtain almost the same energy from up/down motions of water surface, weight ratio of float / counter-weight was set at almost 2 to 1. Then electrical energy is obtained. Model experiments were made in which wave height, wave period, weight of the float, and horizontal cross-sectional area of the float were changed. Efficiency is affected by wether the wave period is greater than that of free mode of the float and counter-weight system itself. It is shown that the efficiency of the system depends on and increases with the dimensionless quantity defined by [unit weight of water × wave height× horizontal cross-sectional area of float/weight of float]
