ABSTRACT
When velocities of currents and sea bottom scours caused by high waves exceed respectively the upper limit speeds of bivalve travel and burrowing -into,bivalves are exposed and dragged on sand, and many of them are thrown up on the shore and die.
Focusing on detached submerged breakwaters which can be expected to improve such natural habitat environment, improvement effect of bivalve mortality and emigration was investigated by such experiments using small scale bivalve models etc.
As a result, the following information was obtained.
(1)Because submerged breakwaters decrease strong seaward current speed and change the current direction, they can prevent many of bivalve eggs and larva from being washed away outside of their habitat.
(2)Because submerged breakwater diminish the velocity of sea bottom change, there is reduction for bivalve burrowing-into speeds.
(3)Although bivalves are easy to be thrown up around the shoreline due to high waves, submerged breakwaters diminish wave height and rate of bivalve throwing, and reduction for the bivalve concentration on shoreline compared with the case of no breakwater. It can be concluded that submerged breakwaters can easily control wave height, currents and sea bottom change to keep the inhabitable state for bivalves.
