ABSTRACT
Among bays and sounds in the Seto Inland Sea, Osaka Bay is still heavily deteriorated due to a large amount of effluent loads into and the enclosed geometry of the bay. We therefore require some active measures to restore and renovate the bay environment.
Some methods were devised to examine their effects on the exchange and mixing of the bay water using the world' s largest Seto Inland Sea hydraulic model. The methods examined were dike construction and geometrical modification of the mouth and the bottom of the bay. All methods have showed their effectiveness in improving the exchange and mixing of the water mass in the north-east part of the bay with depths less than 20m where the water tends to be stagnant.
This result is very suggestive for the environmental restoration and renovation of heavily deteriorated parts which is a critical task in the bay mitigation planning to realize the sustainable development of surrounding areas of the bay.
