ABSTRACT
The Port of Hakata is located in Hakata Bay which is surrounded by Lininonakamichi, the Fukuoka plain and Itoshima peninsula. The bay is called a closed water area as its entrance is narrow, and it consequently slows down the water exchange with the outer sea. It also accumulates the sediment from the land as it gets closer to the shore. As such, the improvement of water quality and removal of sediment are required.
In the Ecopark Zone, which is located on farthest side from the bay entrance, the natural coasts such as Wajiro Tidal Flats, beaches and reefs are abundantly preserved and rich ecosystems with aquatic life and bird species have been created.
However, the public access to the coasts is not well-developed, and currently there are few amenities centering on the waterfront. Therefore infrastructure development is necessary as well as the improvement of water quality and sediment reduction.
The goal of the Eco-Port Model Project in the Port of Hakata is to preserve the rich natural environment mainly in the Wajiro Tidal Flats area, and to carry out dredging and sand-banking as countermeasures for the improvement of sea water quality and reduction of sediment. In the land area, the project aims to improve public access and to construct shore protections, giving deliberate consideration to the environmental habitat.
This report describes the subject matter of the Eco-Port Model Project, as researched by the Port & Harbor Bureau of Fukuoka City. We hope this will be a first step towards the completion of the future Eco-Port in Hakata Port in cooperation with related organizations.
