Manpower Status
MR.. has 431 officers and 31,469 other ranks and totally 31,900 employees.

 

Present Network
MR.. operates a meter-gauge railway network with a total route miles of 2,332 miles and track miles of 3,167 miles. The most important section is from Yangon to Mandalay, 385.5 miles (620.27km.). The Metropolis of Yangon is served by double line circular and suburban railway system of 28.5 route miles (45.9 km.) making use of part of the main line from Yangon to Mandalay and Yangon to Pyay with a connecting line.

 

Rolling Stock Status
MR. has a Rolling Stock fleet of 261 Diesel Locomotives: 167 Diesel Electric and 94 Diesel Hydraulic. In addition, there remams 43 Steam locomotives. MR. has 683 Passenger Coaches and 3,852 Freight Wagons. The status of Rolling Stocks is shown in Annexure A.

 

Workshops
There are three major workshops for Rolling Stocks maintenance ;Locomotive Workshop at Insein (near Yangon), Locomotive Workshop at Ywataung (near Mandalay), and Passenger Coaches & Wagon Workshop at Myitnge (near Mandalay). Besides these three major workshops, there are one Rail car workshop at Fazundaung and one Diesel locomotive workshop at Yangon. For opetration and maintenance, 20 locomotive depots and 26 carriage and wagon depots are scattered all over the railway network.

 

(i) Insein: Locomotive Workshop
This workshop is located in Insein, Yangon. It was originally designed for overhauls of steam ocomotives and production of steam locomotive spare parts. Since 1960, overhauling of deisel electric locomotives bogies, brake gear and traction motor were carried out. At the present time a major portion of the workshop had been transformed and construction of new diesel shunting locomotives, repowering, modification and overhauling of diesel electric locomotives are carried out as well in this workshops. Manufacture of some diesel locomotives spare parts and complete rewinding of D.C. electric traction motor have successfully been accomplished at this workshop.

 

(ii) Ywataung Workshop
It is located near Mandalay. It is organized and equipped for heavy repair of diesel locomotives and production of diesel locomotives spare parts. It is also home of the Railway Technical Training Center.

 

(iii) Mvunge Workshop
The Mvunge Workshop (near Mandalay) is a laige workshop equipped for heavy repair of passanger coaches and freight wagons. In 1976 a new workshop was annexed and later equipped with heavy machines for construction of Rolling Stock.

 

(iv) Panundaung Railway Workshop
Railcar and its trailers are constructed and repaired in this workshop.

 

(v) Tangon Workshop
This shop was originally built as a running shed in the initial stage of dieselisation. It was later transformed for intermendiate repairs of diesel electric locomotives.
