There are two major diesel locomotives workshops Ywataung near Mandalay and Insein near Yangon. Ywataung workshop was constructed between 1969 and 1975 at a total cost of 25 million kyats for the building and 27 million for machinery. Ywataung is also the home of a Railway Technical Training Centre which was built and operated with assistance from Germany. Insein is a large workshop originally built in 1875 to carry out overhaul of steam locomotives.

The yearly programme of the heavy repair of the locomotives are established by the Head Office for each workshop. These programme are regularly changed clue to major damage of the locomotives. The programme is not respected for the following reasons:
