Organization and Management
The-Organization set up of the Myanma Railways is based on departmental system as shown in Appendix "B". The Managing Director who is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Management-Committee, is in overall charge. assisted by two Senior General Manager. The 6 major departments. Operating. Mechanical & Electrical Engineering. Civil Engineering. Commercial & Marketing, Planning & Administration and Finance. The other supporting departments are Supply. Medical and Inspection departments. The railways system is divided into (10) divisions managed by division officers and two General Managers for managed the whole system as the divided into upper & lower regions. Three major workshops Ywataung Locomotives Workshop, Insein Locomotives Workshop and Myitnge Carriages & Wagons Workshop are headed by the General Managers.
Rail track
(a)Rail
For the track M.R use the 75 lb RBS, 60 lb RBS & BS 50 lb BS. standard length of rail is 39 feet. Rails are imported from India. Japan, Korea and very recently from China. Renewal work is done especially in Yangon Mandalay line. Three (3) to five (5) short welded rails are use in Yangon-Bango and Mandalay- Myohaung line. Total track length is 337.13 miles. Out of existing 3377.13 track mile, most of the rail between Mandalay-Lasho and Mandalay-Myitkyina sections have reached more than 70 years of age. Effort have been made to replace with the 75 lb of rails. In the whole system about 900 miles are needed to be replaced. Due to insufficient joint tamping. rail joints are flattened and wheel burns occurred mainly at the entrances of stations and at steep joints.
(b)Fastenings
The type of fastening use in MR are dogspikes. elastic spikes. screw spike and Pandrol type for PC sleeper. More than 90% of fastening is dogspikes which are manufactured by MR's own workshop. Holding power of dog pike is less and it always causes rail creeping. To control the rails. anchors are used. mostly in Yangon-Mandalay line. But anchor are 110t available in sufficient amount due to financial problems. In some places these are stolen.
