Myanma Railways carried 56.51 million passengers or 3059.82 million passenger-miles in 1992/93 and in 1995/96, 54.93 million passengers and 3122.49 million passenger-miles which showed about 2% decreased in the number and around 2% increase in passenger-miles. According to these data the number of passengers decrease from 37.06 million passengers to 34.57 million passengers in main line & increase from 19.45 million passengers to 20.36 million passengers in suburban services but the average trip distance is showing a little increase for these 4 years from 78.80 mile to 85.28 miles in main line and from 54.14 mile to 56-84 mile on the average. This show that long haul passengers increase but short haul passengers decrease. Due to the competition of Road Transport and changing of the economic policy there is a little decrease in passenger traffic in last year. In freight traffic 1.5% increase in ton from 3. 13 million in 1992/93 to 3. 18 ton in 1995/96 10.01 increase in ton-miles from 1992/93 to 1995/96. The available locomotive for use in freight traffic was 48 Nos. in 1994/95 and 42 Nos. in 1995/96. If M.R can provide more availability of locomotive in freight traffic performance may be higher than the existing situation.
