Existing situations and problems of railway transport in Myanmar

Introduction

The inter-regional transport services in the Union of Myanmar consists of four modes. ie Railways, Road, Water and Air transport. Railways transport service is monopolized by state-owned transport enterprise. Myanma Railways.

Transport Sector

In 1995-96. the Myanma Railways shares 25.65% in passenger trips and 54.37% in passenger-miles of the total internal & external transport of passenger by State owned conveyances. For the freight traffic Myanmar Railways shares 37.22% in ton and 14.88% in ton-miles of total internal & external transport of passenger by State owned conveyances.

Traffic Performance

Myanma Railways is a carrier of bulk freight traffic in addition to suburban and long distance passenger traffic. Performance of Myanma Railways for die past four years is shown below.
