5.4 Implementation Expenses

A rough estimation of the direct expenses to implement the program for reduction in transport hours by daytime limited express trains mentioned earlier is as follows:

(1) High-performance body-tilting diesel-car

The number of the cars required will vary largely depending on the possible planning of the train and the number of passenger seats of the cars.

The construction costs of the trainsets for one round trip and three round trips shown in the earlier example of the train plan can be estimated as follows, based on the assumption that the cost per car is \200 million.

* 6-car trainset2 sets12 cars(one roundtrip)\2.4 billion

* 6-car trainset6 sets36 cars(three roundtrips)\7.2 billion

(including one trainset each as the reserve against trouble, etc.)

Boosted utilization of the daytime limited express trains due to the effect of reduction in transport hours will reach to 3 (round trip) services of 6-car trainsets per day even by an estimation based only on the population increase in 2003. Such estimation will require an order of \7 billion for car construction cost as a standard.

The same scale of budget can be spent to increase the number of roundtrip services by trains with 3 cars, according to further consideration on the future condition.

Concerning trainset, the number of passenger seats per car can be increased so that the trainset can transport the same amount by 5 cars. Accordingly, this can lead to possible reduction of car construction cost.
