2) Water contamination

 

The main cause is the waste water from the daily life and the industries which aggravate the eutrophication of the Chao Phraya river.

 

3) Harmful wastes

 

The issue of wastes which is common to all the industrialized nations is also attacking Thailand that has being achieved an economic growth. The major sources of the harmful wastes are the heavy metal harmful organic materials caused by the rapid industrialization of the country. The annual volume is estimated at around 2 million tons.

 

(2) Countermeasures

 

To cope with the environmental pollution, the Thailand Government established the National Environment Protection Act in 1975. Environment Protection Agency was newly created that is responsible for measurement and monitoring of the environment. In 1992 National Environmental Protection Encouragement Act was promulgated and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment was newly established to further tackle this challenge. With regard to their environmental measures, the Japanese government dispatched research groups and extended cooperation toward establishing the Environmental Research and Training Center.

 

2.7 Economic and technological assistance

 

(1) Development plans and assistance from foreign countries

 

Assistance from foreign countries to this country started when she joined the World Bank and IMF and drew credit from the World Bank for the first time in the following year. Since then, from the First Economic Development 5-Year Plan to the 7th Plan currently underway, a number of international organizations and governments have extended cooperation in the form of debts and grants.
