where the bus terminal and commercial centers exist. An agreement has been concluded between Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Thanayong Corporation with a view to construction start in 1995 and completion in 1998.

 

(3) MRTA Project

 

A project organized by MRTA (Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority) in 1993. Various routes and systems were proposed and discussed but it was officially decided to construct the whole system underground September, 1995. The route will pass the eastern part of the city center and connect Bangkok Central Station and Ban Sue Station. Completion is scheduled in the year 2002.

 

2.6 Environmental issues

 

As the worldwide environmental issues, various problems are being given such as climate change, distruction of ozone layer and acid rains due to disposition of wastes, deforestation, marine contamination, desertification, extinction of species, consumption of petrochemical fuel. Due to the rapid economic growth, these symptoms are aggravating in this country, too. To make the solution more difficult, these are occurring simultaneously in Thailand. Following are some explanations for her environmental issues.

 

(1) Major contamination

 

1) Air pollution

 

The total energy consumption which is considered to be the main cause of air pollution is measured to be equal to 31.6 million tons of petroleum every year. The rate of petroleum dependency in Thailand is 56 %. The breakdown of total petroleum consumption is as follows: 30 % is consumed by transportation, 29 % by electric generation, 20% by mining industry, and others. Transportation and electric generation combined consumes more than 50 % of the total energy. And also, it should be noted that more than 50 % of the total energy is consumed in Bangkok.
