ABSTRACT
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. has been developing UE diesel engines with our own technology since 1955. We are now proceeding the research and development of the countermeasures against environmental problem positively in addition to high performance and high reliability which are the traditional main features of UE engines.
We are convinced that UE engine has much flexibility for environmental problem based on the test result of water injection into combustion chamber.
In this paper, we would like to explain the test result of water injection and the designing trends in slow speed diesel engines matched with the environment problem in 21st century.
1. PREFACE
While a hundred years has passed after the birth of diesel engine, diesel engine has been developed and supported under the two major technologies of thermal efficiency and reliability.
At present with the history of one century, diesel engine is now facing to one another major theme, i.e. environment problem, and most of the technological efforts are concentrating on this theme as well known.
Whether we, diesel engine builder, ship builder and ship owner, have will or not, we must stand against this strong wind of environment problem.
Engine builders, ship builders and ship owners are all looking at this direction and must make efforts to solve or stand with environment problem combined with engine performance and reliability that were previously established.
In view of engine builder's stand point, we surely convince our attitude now changes to persuade and solve the environment problems and the problem will be solved in near future as same as the previous theme of thermal efficiency and reliability.
We ask you to comprehend our promotive actions for environment problem.
In Past time, our approach was not fully concentrated on the theme of environment because a little bit mild circumferential condition was there and our technical potential was not used fully.
Technical potentials of concerned parties are enough sufficient and can be trusted to manage environment problems.
