.5  make insurance companies aware of the dangers to life and property of failing to equip ships to operate effectively in the GMDSS.

4  The Sub-Committee assures the maritime community of the continuing utility of Channel 16 in the GMDSS, noting in particular its key functions for distress acknowledgements by radiotelephone, subsequent distress communications, search and rescue communications and on-scene communications, and advises SOLAS ships to monitor Channel 16 where practicable after 1 February 1999, taking into account the need to avoid over-burdening the navigational watch personnel.
