PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE RECOMMENDATIONS ON NAVIGATION
AROUND THE UNITED KINGDOM COAST

In resolution A.768(18), Annex, section 3.1.1 is replaced by:

".1 In the Pentland Firth

"Mariners intending to use the Pentland and Firth should be aware of very strong tidal streams and sets. Difficulties can be encountered when transiting either with or against the tide and Masters should ensure that a close watch is kept at all times on the course, speed and position of their vessels.

Masters of laden tankers not bound to or from Flotta and Scapa Flow should not use the Pentl and Firth in restricted visibility or adverse weather. At other times, there may be a case for transiting with the tide to reduce the time spent in the Firth, although Masters should take account of the general navigational warning above."
