Coppelia has always been a great favorite of audiences here in Japan and I am delighted that my most recent production created for the Birmingham Royal Ballet is being performed by the Star Dancers Ballet, a company of excellence and true dedication.
I believe it is important to respect the great classical traditions established by the creators of the everlasting ballets like Coppelia, Giselle, Swan Lake, the Nutcracker and the Sleeping Beauty. We must however ensure that these works keep pace with the ever changing standards of today and above all communicate and give pleasure to you the public. This is our aim and I hope you enjoy this lovely ballet with it's ravishing score by Delibes.
Coppelia, the passionate story of a living doll has amused and delighted audiences with its tale of jealousy, experiment and power since the first performance in Paris in 1870 in front of an audience which included Napoleon ?V .
The Star Dancers Ballet's November production of Coppelia is a collaboration between the Birmingham Royal Ballet from the UK, and Star Dancers Ballet's talented company members who are bringing this popular folk tale to life. Sir Peter Wright's version with Peter Farmer's designs will I am sure attract new fans, and delight existing fans of the Star Dancers Ballet Company.
